Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the southwestern part of Uganda, near the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering an area of just 33.7 square kilometers, it’s one of Uganda’s smallest parks but is famous for its mountain gorilla trekking and stunning landscapes. The park is situated in the Virunga Mountains and encompasses three volcanic peaks: Muhavura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo, which contribute to the park’s diverse environment, ranging from montane forests to alpine grasslands. Mgahinga is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which spans across Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo, and is home to one of the largest populations of mountain gorillas in the world.

Mgahinga is one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorillas, and it offers a less crowded, more intimate gorilla trekking experience compared to Bwindi. The park also offers opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring caves. Mgahinga’s volcanic mountains create a dramatic backdrop for adventure activities, and visitors are treated to incredible views of the surrounding landscapes.

Wildlife at the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga is primarily known for its mountain gorillas, with a small population living in the park’s dense forests. Besides gorillas, the park is home to other primates such as golden monkeys, blue monkeys, and baboons. Other wildlife includes forest buffaloes, bushpigs, and antelopes like the duiker. While not as wildlife-rich as some of Uganda's larger parks, Mgahinga provides excellent wildlife sightings in a more intimate setting.

Mgahinga is a great spot for birdwatching, with over 115 bird species recorded in the park. The forest is home to many endemic species of the Albertine Rift, including the Black Bee-eater, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, and Rwenzori Turaco. Migratory birds can also be spotted in the park during certain seasons, and the combination of forest and alpine habitats makes Mgahinga a unique birding destination.

Best time to visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The best time to visit Mgahinga is during the dry season (from June to September and December to February), which makes trekking and hiking more accessible. However, the wet season (from March to May and October to November) is great for birdwatching and enjoying the lush scenery.
