Aberdare National Park is a breathtaking highland region known for its lush forests, deep ravines, and diverse wildlife. Visitors may also spot elephants, buffalos, leopards, and various species of antelope such as the suni and the bushbuck. Aberdare National Park is a birdwatcher's dream, boasting over 250 recorded bird species. The park's diverse habitats create opportunities to observe both endemic and migratory birds. The high-altitude moorlands are home to unique species such as the Aberdare cisticola and the mountain buzzard, while the forests are rich with colorful birds like the African crowned eagle and the elusive malachite sunbird. The park is particularly noted for its population of raptors, with several species of hawks and eagles frequently spotted soaring above the lush landscapes. Birdwatching is excellent throughout the year, with peak activity occurring during the wet seasons from March to May and from October to December when migratory birds arrive and breeding takes place.

One of the park’s most famous features is its waterfalls, with the Karuru Falls being the most impressive, plunging over 270 meters in three steps. The moorlands offer stunning views of the surrounding areas, and on clear days, visitors can see Mount Kenya in the distance. Aberdare National Park is also rich in history. It was a favorite retreat of Queen Elizabeth II, and it was here, at Treetops Lodge, that she ascended to the British throne following the death of her father, King George VI.

The best time to visit Aberdare National Park is during the dry seasons, which run from June to September and from January to February. During these months, the weather is more favorable for wildlife viewing as animals are more active and easier to spot against the drier backdrop of the landscape. The wet seasons, particularly from March to May, can lead to heavy rainfall, making some areas of the park challenging to navigate but also bringing a burst of life to the flora and fauna. While wildlife viewing can be more difficult during the rains, it is also a rewarding time for birdwatching, with numerous migratory species arriving and the park’s ecosystems thriving.
